Otis Redding-Stand By Me

Perhaps better known when performed by Ben E. King, ‘Stand By Me’ appears on Otis Redding’s 1964 release Pain In My Heart. Otis’s version moves a little bit more quickly and has slightly different instrumentation, but all of the soul remains across both versions. Personally, I like to have my cake and eat it too, and that’s why I listen to both.

Chad Valley-Anything

I’ve been trying to get back into the swing of really summery, breezy songs lately, and Chad Valley’s ‘Anything’ delivers. With great production value and synth sounds, ‘Anything’ is perfect for any beach party playlist, and it sounds great in the car on the way to the beach too. Chad Valley is the side project of Jonquil’s Hugo Manuel, and if I had to describe his new sound, I would say it shines. Enjoy.

The XX-Islands

I recently made a spontaneous trip to NYC to try to catch a free concert in Central Park featuring the XX. Unfortunately, by the time I got there security wasn’t letting any more people into the venue, and the trip was basically for not. I was able to hear them pretty clearly from where I was standing, and I could see remnants of their light show. Basically, I’ve been listening to the XX a lot over the past couple of days in hopes of trying to capture what I can still only imagine is their on-stage presence.

The Strokes-Between Love and Hate

I revisited The Strokes’ Room on Fire album today, and loved the sentiment in ‘Between Love and Hate’. It’s a happy, driven rock song, but has such melancholy lyrics. Oh, and the guitar sound that Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond Jr. create on this record is nearly perfect.

Beirut-Scenic World

Every time that I hear the opening bars of a ‘Scenic World’, a smile makes its way across my face, without fail. This track appears on Beirut’s Lon Gisland EP, which is the follow up to 2006’s Gulag Orkestar, and is also where ‘Elephant Gun’ appears. Enjoy.

“…when I feel alive, I try to imagine a careless life…

….a scenic world where the sunsets are all breathtaking…”

Beige-In Kind

Beige is a Brooklyn-based group that have created an epic, almost intoxicating opus entitled ‘In Kind’, which drones on for 7+ minutes, but in the best way possible. Driving to this song makes the trees and lines on the road whip by at a slower pace, listening to it through headphones is like audio Xanax, and all the while the tune creates an atmosphere that evokes deep thought and a sense of wonder. As Pitchfork’s review says, ‘In Kind’ is “worth turning up and tuning out to.” Enjoy.

Walkmen-Stranded

The intricate and beautiful horn arrangements that remain present throughout ‘Stranded’ seem like quite a departure from the usual for the Walkmen, even though they have historically been users of vintage instruments and traditional styles of playing them. ‘Stranded’ is a fresh and appetizing preview of the band’s forthcoming album, Lisbon.

Lisbon will be released on September 14.

Cults-Oh My God

‘Oh My God’ starts off with a heavy drum beat that creates a foreshadowing feeling of danger or treachery ahead, but is quickly offset by the warm, high-pitched female vocals that float across the track. You can download a free digital copy of their Cults 7” album at the band’s bandcamp, which includes the tracks ‘Go Outside’, ‘The Curse’, and ‘Most Wanted’.

Memory Tapes-Bicycle

Memory Tapes is a staple chillwave band that, regrettably, I haven’t really been able to sink my teeth into much. Check out their track ‘Bicycle’ from their release Seek Magic, if you haven’t already.
